Easter in the Algarve

Spending Easter in the Algarve offers plenty to see and do for the whole family, making it the perfect place to head for a fun and relaxing holiday when the kids are off school.

Here, we share some of the reasons why you and your family should spend Easter in the Algarve this year, and what you can expect to find during this special time of year.

Easter on the beach

With temperatures reaching around 20° C, you’ll love spending Easter on the beach. Whether you want to relax in the sun with a book, paddle in the sea, build sandcastles, or simply take a walk and admire the beauty of the Algarve’s beaches, you’ll never be short of things to do.

Don’t forget to treat yourself to drinks and snacks from some of the wonderful beach bars and restaurants too, as you’ll find that they offer something for all tastes, including great examples of traditional cuisine and also some traditional Portuguese Easter delicacies like the delicious “Folar de folhas” sweet bread.

Explore the Four Seasons Vilamoura

The Four Seasons Vilamoura is the perfect place to stay in the Algarve as you will find that your resort offers plenty to keep the whole family occupied.

A trip to Vilamoura will give you the chance to go out on boat trips, discover all of the activities that the marina has to offer, and enjoy a game of golf on one of the town’s popular courses. Alternatively, make the most out of your hotel’s facilities and have a swim or a spa treatment to help you unwind while the children play.

Easter activities in the Algarve

If you would like to spend part of your holiday seeing Easter traditions, a trip to the Algarve will not disappoint. On Easter Sunday you can be amazed by the stunning Flower Torches Festival at São Brás de Alportel, a tradition which sees the streets decorated with red carpets and flowers, and a parade from the church with people carrying gorgeous handmade flower “torches”.

Another Easter tradition that happens in the Algarve on Easter Sunday is the Festa Pequena which happens in Loulé, followed by Festa Grande 15 days later.

This is the biggest religious festivity in the south of Portugal and Festa Pequena welcomes thousands of people to take part in a parade to carry “Mãe Soberana” through the streets. This parade goes from the Nossa Senhora da Piedade chapel to the church of São Francisco. Then, Festa Grande consists of a huge procession carrying “Mãe Soberana” to the sanctuary located on a hill west of Loulé.

With so many great things to do in the Algarve at Easter, don’t delay in booking your family holiday to this fantastic destination today and discovering it all for yourself.
